EPIC Systems’ Industrial Vision System Application Featured in Vision Systems Design Magazine

Vision System Cover PageEPIC Systems, Inc’s Machine Vision Systems Group is featured with the cover article in the May 2014 edition of Vision Systems Design Magazine. The article highlights the engineering of an Industrial Vision System Application that inspects automotive products.

Chris Walker, Machine Vision Project Manager at EPIC, is featured in the article explaining the industrial vision system that EPIC developed to reduce the number of false failures in an automated inspection system for automotive canisters. The industrial vision system inspects the sealant on the canisters for presence and uniformity to determine the position and consistency.

The client’s production line moved at 900 parts/min and their desired false failure rate was 0%. To achieve the client’s goals, EPIC engineered a system with two vision inspection methods. The canisters had to successfully pass through both inspection methods to be considered “good.”

Industrial Vision SystemFor the first inspection method, EPIC used edge tools from Cognex Vision Tools software. This software was used to locate the top and bottom edge of the sealant as well as the top edge of the canister. EPIC was able to measure the distance of the sealant bead from the top edge of the canister.

Walker used histogram tools as the second inspection method. Histogram tools count the number of pixels meeting certain requirements within a specific area. This allows the bead to be located and inspected for any flaws such as breaks or holes in the sealant.

In addition to introducing two methods of vision inspection, EPIC used polarizing filters to reduce the glare. Reducing the glare allowed the system to inspect more accurately since glare can cause key features to be missed during the inspection process.

By using optical polarizers and filters EPIC simplified the machine vision algorithm. The algorithm has been tested on both the Cognex In-Sight Micro 1400 and High Speed In-Sight 5600 vision system. The In-Sight 5600 enables a production speed of 1200 parts/min. Read the full article at, Vision Systems Design Magazine.
